I own a Strata-East CD reissue that is not on your discography.

Its title is "Steadfast" SECD 9008, and it is a solo piano album by the late John Hicks. It consists of 13 tracks, four originals [including the title song] and 9 standards. Among the standards is a very beautiful rendition of Lush Life.

The reissue I have was pressed in Germany and released by Bellarphon in 1991.

"Steadfast" is, in my judgment, an extremely fine recording--equal to or superior to Hick's Mayback album--and I am surprised to see that is missing not only from the Strata-East Fan Club's discography, but also missing from the Wikipedia John Hicks discography!

The very skimpy liner notes give the recording date as May 21, 1975, which is, coincidentally, the date given for the recording of "Hells Bells," my favorite John Hicks album.

When you listen to the two albums the styles are so completely different that it seems unlikely that they were recorded on the same day. But knowing John Hicks's versatililty, I suppose that it was possible to have recorded both albums in one day.

Does anyone have any more information about this album?

I'm curious as to whether you've had any feedback from Charles Tolliver or any other Strata East people.

I realize most of this stuff is out of print, but I have mixed feelings about the "free buffet" approach to an independent label's music. SE was, after all, one of the few operations that actually treated the artists fairly.

ish said...

Anonymous, nope, never heard from Tolliver. I would gladly delete any link anyone feels is inappropriate. On my home blog I have gotten lots of feedback from musicians who are happy their music is getting out there again after years out of print. I don't think, unfortunately, this stuff was ever particularly profitable for anyone. I would certainly urge people to go out and buy CD reissues of stuff, like John Betsch's album, that is being reissued with the involvement of and royalty to the musicians involved.

Meanwhile, I'm sure you've helped yourself to everything you wanted, eh?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the response. The point I was trying to make was not that the stuff was ever profitable. I do wonder if SE could ever get full-catlalog reissues together, whether the freebies would hurt.

I said I have mixed feelings. I'm not Lars Ulrich, or Mr. Download Cop. I'm aware some musicians are pysched that their stuff isn't getting out. Others, like M. Gira, to name one very vocal critic, are not at all happy with downloading. As far as helping myself to anything, no, I didn't grab any of the files, for what it's worth. MAybe at some point I will. I do think it's a valuable site or the discography alone.

Simon666 said...

Anonymous,
The sales of any future re-issues of the SE catalogue will be aided by the exponentially greater awareness of that catalogue by this interim presence and availability. 35 years is a long time for music not to be able to be heard.
A certain proportion of the supporters of the contemporary work of the various artists and composers - let's say, everyone under about 55 years old - is built from people who have become aware of them via this sort of availability; and will perhaps make up the majority of initial purchasers any such future re-releases. I'm 47 years old and SE stopped publishing most of these before I had finished my teenage years, before I was even really aware of jazz.
What's the alternative? I guess it's going back to the private ebay market economy where a few records change hands between a very small number of jazz collectors at exorbitant prices - none of which, of course, goes to the artist either.

Anonymous said...

Dear Simon,

I admit, I'm convinced. Thanks for taking the time to give thoughtful responses. It IS better to have the stuff available than stuck in the hands of the collectors. I still can't understand why Charles T. never reissued most of it.
